Abstract

A detailed study of the magnetization, magnetostriction, and change in surface acoustic wave velocity with applied field was done for sputtered Tb -Fe (.2<x<.6). The largest magnetostrictlon velocity change occured for x about equzb to 0.4 (magnetostriction about 200x10 and a velocity change of 0.5% per micron of film thickness at 120 MHz). A simple first order expression relating AV/V to film thickness, operating frequency and magnetic and elastic properties of the film and substrate was verified experimentally. Better materials than Tb-Fe for tunable SAW device applications are suggested. x
