Abstract

The properties of SmCo film in a magnetic rotary encoder were studied. The SmCo films were prepared by R.F. magnetron sputtering, A rectangular magnetization pattern was recorded and read by a ring head in a digital and longitudinal recording. The peak output voltage is influenced by the spacing between the recording medium and the head, and also by the bit length, under pulse crowding, which is the interval between centers of magnetization reversals. The recording characteristics obtained were superior to those of standard magnetic encoders.
