Abstract

Silicate-bonded silicon carbide refractories have been prepared by reaction bonding. Mullite or sillimanite was used for bonding of silicon carbide. The percentage of silicate bond was varied from 15 to 30 wt.%. Molybdenum disilicate (4 wt.%) has been used as an infiltrant for silicon carbide refractories. Modulus of rupture (MOR) of these refractories increases with molybdenum disilicate addition. Thermal expansion coefficients of the refractories vary from 32.8×10 −6 to 4.1×10 −6/°C. These are resistant to non-ferrous metals but are attacked by molten salts.
