Abstract

The potentiometric behaviour of maleic acid-vinylpyrrolidone copolymer p(MA-co-VP) was studied as a function of added (1:1) electrolyte. The copolymer composition as well as the first and second intrinsic ionization values pK 0 were determined. The values of pK 0 1, pK 0 2 and ΔG 0 (the standard electrostatic and conformational free energy change) were found to depend on the ionic strength. Also it was found that ΔG 0 approaches a constant value when the added electrolyte concentration exceeded 0.5 M and the polyacid behaves like its monomeric analogue.
