Abstract

The inherent properties such as flexibility in design and cost inexpensive observed in Light Weight Concrete (LWC) makes very popular in recent decades. Many studies have been carried out in the area of LWC to study the structural performance in various applications. Nevertheless few attempts have been made in review of construction materials used for producing LWC with noteworthy mechanical and durability properties. Therefore, to expand the applications of Light Weight Concrete, this review paper was made which elaborates the usage of various materials such as vermiculite, Styrofoam (a packing material), Coconut Shell (CS), Oil Palm Shell (OPS), Oil-Palm Boiler Clinker (OPBC), Ficus Exasperata Leaf Ash (FELA), Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA), variety of mineral admixtures in LWC and its influence in properties of LWC. This review paper describes elaborately about the method of production of LWC and the properties in the aspect of workability, density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and durability properties and also about feasibility of using LWC in various applications. The main scope of this literature study is to create an overview of LWC that would help practitioners who are proposed to practice projects in the area of Light Weight Concrete.
