Abstract

The Fe-Y2O3 alloys with the evenly dispersed Y2O3 nanoparticles into the grain interior have been successfully fabricated by a versatile facile and scalable route. Firstly, Fe-Y2O3 nanocomposites were synthesized through solution combustion synthesis and hydrogen reduction. Subsequently, the Fe-Y2O3 alloys were prepared by pressureless sintering of the as-synthesized Fe-Y2O3 nanocomposites. The microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties of the Fe-Y2O3 alloys sintered at different temperatures were studied in detail. The Fe-Y2O3 alloy sintered at 900 °C with an average grain size of 0.96 μm and the uniformly dispersed Y2O3 nanoparticles size of less than 100 nm has the tensile strength of 520.6 MPa and the saturation induction of 1.726 T. With the sintering temperature increasing, the grain size, saturation induction and elongation of the Fe-Y2O3 alloy increase, while the tensile strength, microhardness and and coercive force decrease. The saturation induction value of Fe-Y2O3 alloy sintered at 1300 °C reaches 1.742 T, the average grain size reaches 62.1 μm and the tensile strength is 353.5 MPa.
