Abstract

The work starts from the view that, in certain dilute magnetic alloys as Cu-Fe and Cu-Co, important interactions are taking place inside clusters of a few impurity ions on neighbouring lattice sites. The relevant energy terms are discussed with special emphasis on their spin dependence. The most interesting terms are provided by the transition of d-electrons to neighbouring atoms. These terms yield a mechanism for parallel alignment of atomic spins, which is structure dependent, and can disappear in large, symmetric clusters. The role of the s-d coupling is briefly discussed. The theory is able to qualitatively well describe the features of actual systems.
