Abstract

Carbon cluster ions C +· n with n = 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 16 were produced by dissociative electron impact ionization of overcrowded perchloro hydrocarbons. We studied these ions by MS/MS methods including unimolecular mass analysed ion kinetic energy (MIKE) spectra and kinetic energy releases (KERs), collisionally activated dissociations (CAD), and charge stripping. The average kinetic energy releases as well as the instability towards fragmentation were observed to increase with increasing cluster size. MIKE and CAD spectra demonstrated characteristic “magic” neutral losses. All of the data are in remarkable agreement with available data on C +· n ions formed by laser vaporization of graphite, which suggests that the same ion structures are formed by both methods.
