Abstract

Nanometer-scale multilayered TiCN/ZrCN hard coatings with bilayer periods ranging from 4.8 to 20 nm were deposited by the cathodic arc method. The elemental and phase composition, texture, bilayer period, microhardness, adhesion and tribological performance were investigated. The highest microhardness (∼35 GPa) and the best wear behavior were found for the TiCN/ZrCN multilayer with the bilayer period of about 10 nm.
