Abstract

This study aims to improve the interfacial properties of Al/Y2O3 composites by using pre-oxidised powder. For this purpose, aluminium powder was oxidized, and composites were fabricated via vacuum hot-pressing process at 600 °C with 5 and 15 wt% Y2O3 contents, respectively. The pre-formed Al2O3 and Y2O3 reacted during the hot-pressing process, and the Y4Al2O9 phase was formed at the interface. The wear resistance and corrosion behaviour of samples were improved by the addition of Y2O3 and the formation of Y4Al2O9. Especially, the corrosion resistance of samples increased significantly, and corrosion rate of the aluminium was reduced from 0.1698 mm/year to 0.0261 mm/year by the addition of 15 % Y2O3 and formed Y4Al2O9.
