Abstract

13 2-hydroxy bacteriopheophorbide a methylester (OH-BPME) isolated from Rhodobacter spheroides has been arranged in behenic acid as well as linoleic acid monolayers on a cadmium ions containing subphase. This dye molecule has not been designed specifically for monolayer experiments. As a result of floating monolayer experiments behenic acid layers have turned out to be the appropriate matrix. The mono- and multilayers deposited onto quartz substrates have been investigated by using absorption and polarized angle-resolved absorption spectroscopy as well as steady-state and spatially resolved fluorescence measurements. Parameters of the deposition (pretreatment of the substrate, operation surface pressure, number and sequence of deposited monolayers) have been varied in order to investigate the effect to the spectroscopic features of the sample. The absorption spectrum of OH-BPME/behenic acid layers on quartz substrate is slightly red shifted compared with solution. Furthermore, a stronger red shifted additional aggregate band appears. The ratio between monomer and aggregate is effected by both the mole fraction of OH-BPME within an individual monolayer and the number of transferred layers. The principal share of the OH-BPME molecules is aggregated. Mainly small-sized aggregates are assumed. As distinct from the monomers the aggregates are well oriented and homogeneously distributed over a certain region of the sample. © 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
