Abstract

The sensation of warmth or coolness to touch when skin is brought into contact with a fabric is a transient heat conduction phenomenon and contributes to the per ception of comfort of a garment. The aim of this study is to establish what fabric properties influence thermal touch sensations. Experiments were conducted in which the thermal response of skin contacting a fabric was simulated. The rate of temperature drop in the skin, which is a measure of the coolness sensation, is correlated with the outer layer thickness of the fabric, which can be estimated from sample thickness measurements at just two light pressures.
