Abstract
Composite materials are a combination of two or more constituent materials having significantly different physical and chemical properties. However, the properties of composite materials are quite different from the properties of the individual components. This article describes in details the structure and compositions of the composite materials along with the properties and applications of polymer matrix, ceramic matrix and metal matrix composites. Composites in general are very strong, stiff, light weight, possess high strength-to-weight ratio in comparison to pure matrix alternatives, and are widely used in many industrial applications.
