Abstract

Aim The aims are (1) to develop a system for intelligent and rapid mining of association rules between the properties and therapeutic efficacy of Chinese materia medica (CMM), and (2) to perform correlation analysis of the results. Methods According to the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, a database of quantized CMM information was built. Then, association rule mining and correlation analysis were performed on the database of quantized CMM information. Results With minimum support threshold of 0.08 and minimum confidence threshold of 0.6, 133 association rules were discovered. When the level of significance was set at 0.025, χ2 test revealed no correlation between the antecedents and consequents of rules, while other correlation measures suggested different results. Conclusion The system for mining of association rules between the properties and therapeutic efficacy of CMM is easy to operate. As the parameters are set, corresponding association mining model can be constructed. The mining results are intuitive and correlation analysis can be easily performed to determine whether the rules were significant.
