Abstract

The guided, complex, and virtual modes of the planar left-handed material waveguides are studied. The modal dispersion and field distributions are analyzed for the systems with step and parabolic profiles of dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. It is shown that anomalously high magnitudes of the magnetic fields may be observed in such structures. Effects of material nonlinearity and spatial dispersion are discussed.
