Abstract

A first order approximation formula for the propagation of shock waves in inhomogeneous medium was presented by extending Chisnell's method. Corrections to the formula are obtained taking into account effects of second- order reflected waves. The calculation is restricted to the case of strong shock limit and it is shown that the rate of growth of the shock strength obtained by the first approximation is little influenced, so far as the strong shock limit is concerned, by taking the effects of the second-order waves into consideration.
