Abstract

The solutions of the wave equation localized along the ray trajectories are found for the asymmetric distribution of the dielectric constant of the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. These solutions are the coherent states known in quantum mechanics in the form of localized wave packets with a minimum possible width and diffractional angle divergence. These states make it possible to naturally introduce the concept of ray width and clearly to observe a connection between the wave and ray descriptions.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
