Abstract

It is shown that dispersion is not observed in the propagation of a weakly damped wave, and dissipation is frequency-dependent. For strongly damped waves, dispersion and dissipation are observed. However, a wave in a viscoplastic medium decays over very short distances and the penetration depth of strongly damped waves of defects is bounded by the skinlayer thickness.
