Abstract

An equivalent refractive index mathematic model is presented according to the geometrical structure of multi-coating D-shaped fibres, and the analysis of the loss characteristics of this kind of fibre is given. The results indicate that the losses of the propagation modes in the fibre are related to the distance between the polished plane and the fibre core, and to the refractive index and the thickness of the polymer adhesive. This provides theoretical instructions for us to choose suitable parameters of fibre devices. Since the losses of propagation modes of different states of polarization are different, a multi-coating D-shaped fibre will possess polarization extinction characteristic.
