Abstract

The rehabilitation and education of profoundly mentally retarded, nonambulatory persons presents a great challenge. These individuals have a general lack of movement and a serious inability to adapt to the environment. Much educational programming for this population consists of various forms of physical, sensory, and social stimulation. Physical therapists typically provide educators with guidelines for various positions designed to prevent further progression of the individual's postural deformities, lessen his physical fatigue, and increase his kinesthetic and environmental awareness. We have designed and fabricated a piece of classroom equipment that provides an individual with the opportunity to receive inclined prone positioning and vestibular, kinesthetic, and social stimulation concurrently (Fig. 1). The unit is free standing, is completely self-contained, and costs less than $100 in materials.
