Abstract

This article explores the role of the intensive care nurse in caring for the patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who is being turned prone. It describes the pathophysiology and clinical features of ARDS, and then introduces the theoretical principles behind prone positioning, followed by a discussion of the specialist knowledge and skills required by the intensive care nurse in order to safely and effectively care for these critically ill patients.
