Abstract

Summary Anaerobic treatment stimulated adventitious bud initiation in Torenia stem segments cultured on a nutrient medium without phytohormone. A short term treatment (5 to 15 min) with 100 % N2 stream caused an increment in the number of meristematic zones formed on the epidermis, and raised the percentage of cultures producing adventitious buds so far as about 50%. Similar treatment with air stream showed no effect. The treatment with N2 was effective only when it was given to the expiants just after their excision from mother plants. The treatment given to the expiants which were in culture for more than 1 h could not cause any effect. Addition of anticytokinin to the medium did not inhibit the stimulatory effects of anaerobic treatment.
