Abstract
Foliar application of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) to 2-week-old bean plants induced radial enlargement of stems and abscission of leaves and stems. Longitudinal splits, exudation of sap, and swelling of the stem occurred about 1 week after the treatment. Cell counts showed that stem swelling was the result of extensive radial enlargement of cells rather than cell division in the vascular region following ethephon treatment.
