Abstract

Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) can trace their traditional large ward style to the 1940s when the focus of design was use of basic monitoring technology and increasing the ease for caregivers to continuously observe and respond to multiple premature infants. The growing awareness of infection control, safety, developmentally appropriate care, privacy, and importance of the developing relationship between infant and family has shifted the priorities in NICU design.
