Abstract
Professor Youyou Tu, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for “her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against malaria” (https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/2015/press.html). This therapy is based on the sesquiterpenoid artemisinin, isolated from Artemisia annua. Artemisinin and its derivatives, administered in the form of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), are currently the best treatment for malaria.
