Abstract

ABSTRACT A number of species of sponge showed enhanced aggregation behaviour in the presence of cell extracts prepared under defined conditions previously found suitable for other sponges. The promoting activity of one such preparation appeared to be based on a minor component of the total extract. The specificity of promotion was of a low order and led to mixed aggregate formation from species that segregated specifically in unpromoted mixtures. The observations are discussed in relation to the known antigenic relationships of the cell surfaces of the species examined.
