Promoting active learning through assignments

Abstract

The assignments in a four-week unit on data communications protocols in a first networking course are designed to increase student participation in their learning. In this unit, students are introduced to the OSI reference model and to the DHCP, Ethernet, ARP, IP, ICMP, UDP and TCP protocols. A sample assignment, how it is set up by the preceding lab, and how the following lecture builds on the assignment are presented.
