Abstract

Light and electron microscopic study of immunocytochemical preparations have proved remarkably powerful tools in neurobiology. In a single preparation, one can learn about shape, position, and biochemical composition. This review is intended for non-immunocytochemists, and points out potential sources of error in commonly-used immunocytochemical methods and some of the problems in interpretation. Hopefully an awareness of limitations can serve as a solid basis for a real appreciation of the power of immunocytochemistry.
