Abstract

Construction project delay has become a menace that characterizes construction sector, thus reducing quality and performance. This study investigates the prominence and the relationships among key construction delay factors using the DEMATEL method. Study results show that key factors influence delay at different levels. It is discovered that Rework is the most influencing factor of construction delay, while Design Change influences delay the least. Therefore, consultant’s experience and technology accuracy, which are the associated sub criteria of the design process, are essential in minimizing errors in project design. Also, there is a need for quality project management and supervision as measures to mitigate rework during construction, thus improving productivity, project quality, and attenuate construction delay. It is also noteworthy that this study explains importance of mathematical solutions to engineering problems.
