Abstract

AT Davis, California, grape buds developing on the basal portions of shoots normally enter a dormant stage about September. By the following April the buds usually begin rapid growth. Both a small amount of cold and a certain interval of time are required for dormancy to break. If the dormant buds could be made to grow in the autumn, the crop of the following year could be estimated. Since gibberellin has been reported to break the dormancy of buds in peach1 and potato2,3, and of epicotyls in the tree peony4, it was tested for this purpose on grapes.
