Abstract

The paper discusses the options open to implementors of Prolog interfaces to relational databases with an account of their advantages. Experience has been gained with providing interfaces for commercial use for a wide variety of Prologs and databases. The paper describes the fundamental components for a tightly coupled system and goes on to comment on particular drawbacks in commercially available Prolog systems that affect the interface implementation. A tight coupling with the Oracle relational database management system is described in some detail as an example implementation. Experience with using the interfaces is discussed and performance figures given.
