Abstract

Experimental data of L-subshell ionization cross sections and L 3-subshell alignment for projectiles with nuclear charge Z 1 = 1–16 and a wide range of impact velocities are presented and compared with theory. For proton impact the experimental data are well reproduced by advanced calculations which include the Coulomb repulsion of the projectile by the target nucleus. For heavier projectiles the Z 1 2 scaling behaviour of cross sections predicted by first-order theories apparently is only a crude approximation. Possible reasons for the observed discrepancies are discussed. A quantitative description of the experimental data requires more comprehensive theoretical models.
