Abstract

Agricultural crop production is highly dependent upon environmental conditions among which air quality plays a central role. Various air pollutants have been identified to have a potential negative influence on commercial crops including SO2, NO2 y O3. In particular, ozone in the lower atmosphere has been identified as the most serious cause of crop loss in the world. In this paper, agricultural benefits of ozone control are measured using a damage function approach. These benefit estimates are applied in the benefit estimation an environmental policy designed to reduce ozone concentration on baseline Mapocho river basin ozone levels. According to the results, the agricultural benefits of ozone control in the Mapocho river basin, in present value, are approximately US$173.7 millions, which correspond to an equivalent annual benefit of US$20.8 millions.La produccion agricola depende fuertemente de las condiciones medioambientales, entre las que la calidad del aire juega un rol preponderante. En la literatura se han identificado diversos contaminantes atmosfericos como causantes de potenciales efectos negativos sobre la produccion agricola comercial, entre los que se encuentran el SO2, NO2 y O3. En particular, el O3 presente en la capa mas baja de la atmosfera ha sido identificado como el contaminante aereo mas fitotoxico y danino en el mundo. En este trabajo de investigacion, se estiman los beneficios agricolas fisicos asociados a un plan de control de los niveles de ozono troposferico, utilizando el enfoque del dano evitado. Ademas, los beneficios fisicos estimados se utilizan para estimar los beneficios economicos asociados a una politica ambiental disenada para reducir la concentracion base de ozono troposferico en la cuenca del Rio Mapocho. Los resultados obtenidos indican que los beneficios agricolas del control de los niveles de ozono en la cuenca del Rio Mapocho, alcanzan un valor presente de aproximadamente 173,7 millones de dolares, que corresponde a un flujo anual equivalente de los beneficios agricolas de 20,8 millones de dolares.
