Abstract

We have projected Wood's calculated three-dimensional energy bands of paramagnetic iron to obtain band gaps in the two-dimensional energy bands for (001) and (110) paramagnetic iron surfaces. Extensive band gaps show the possibitlity that many surface states exist. The most important surface states probably exist well away from the center of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, and may explain the existence of magnetically dead layers at surfaces of Fe and Ni.
