Abstract

Qualitative theoretical analysis of the existence of Shockley surface states on (001), (011) and (111) faces of FCC and (0001) face of HCP transition metals has been carried out using the combined surface projections and general rules approach. Conclusions agree with results of existing numerical calculations of Shockley surface states. Available experiments are tentatively discussed in the light of the results obtained.
