Abstract

The projected shell model (PSM) study of $^{98\ensuremath{-}102}\mathrm{Sr}$ and $^{100\ensuremath{-}104}\mathrm{Zr}$ nuclei is carried out. The reliability of the ground-state wave function is checked by reproducing yrast spectra and electromagnetic properties. The mechanism for the onset of sudden and large deformation at $N=60$ is worked out. The present piece of research work has unified the two different, or conflicting, early explanations for the onset of deformation at $N=60$ by the spherical shell model and mean-field theory.
