Abstract

Southern Company and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) successfully started the world's largest (500 metric TPD) carbon capture plant MHI's KM-CDR® on a coal-fired power plant in June 2011 at Alabama Power's Plant Barry. The captured CO2 is transported via pipeline approximately 12 miles to Citronelle oil field where it is injected into the Paluxy formation, a saline reservoir, for storage. This part of the CCS demonstration project is the DOE funded Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB) phase III Anthropogenic Test. This paper will include the status and results to date of this demonstration project along with research plans associated with the 500 TPD CO2 capture facility.
