Abstract

Although the Bocono Irrigation System in Venezuela is well constructed, has ample water supplies and good soils, the system had never been used to its potential. In 1975-76, only one hectare in ten was put into production. The main problem that year was lack of timely credit with which to buy seed. Project 2000 was developed to greatly increase plantings in irrigable areas of the system. Strategy was directed to the campesino sector and at the institutional level. Results were shown by an increase in plantings of 450%, or 1200 ha, over the previous year; this bettered by 35%, or 400 ha, the peak plantings ever achieved in the system. Strategies, results and implications of the project are discussed.
