Abstract

A Qualitative Study on the Use of Project Based Learning Method in Web Design Course. The aim of this study is to explore students’ perceptions of the use of Project Based Learning (PBL) method in Web Design Course. Study group included fourth year students enrolled at the department of Computer Technologies and Instruction at Education Faculty, at department of Computer Teaching at Technical Education Faculty and second year students of Vocational and Technical College in Firat University. This is a qualitative study in nature. In order to collect qualitative data, an interview form including four semistructured questions, was used and totally 54 students were interviewed. Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. Students indicated that PBL provided effective learning, active participation and permanence in learning. They also emphasized that PBL gave them the opportunity of practicing, increased cooperation and motivation. So they wanted PBL to be used in other similar courses as well. Students complained lack of theoretical knowledge, insufficiency of time and effective supervision. Based on the study results, following recommendations are offered: PBL method should be used in other similar design courses. The students should be directed according to the principles of PBL and should be provided efficient theoretical knowledge. There should be effective communication between students and teachers in PBL process. Teachers should have both theoretical and technical knowledge about the course and PBL method. Necessary equipment should be provided to implement PBL method effectively in Web Design course. Students should do more practices to make suitable and correct assessment.
