Abstract

The European pear belongs to the species Pvrus communis L. There are a large number of other pear species in the world, but they ali originate from Europe or Asia. The history of pear cultivation dates back to ancient times. Today, the pear is spread ali over the world and is the second most important Continental fruit species. Pear production in Serbia is not large, the area under pear orchards is decreasing. A large number of cultivars of different ripening periods are grown in Serbia, the most important of which is the Williams (Bartlett), while the most important rootstock is Ba29, a rootstocks selected from quince. Modem pear plantations have irrigation and fertigation system, as well as anti-hail nets. In modem plantations, planting distances are narrow, which allows a large number of plants per unit area. The tree form in such plantations is generally a slender spindle, while other tree forms are used in different cases of trees vigor and soil fertility. Pear fruits can be stored up to 8 months in modem coldstores, but only under optimal storage conditions.
