Abstract

In India Corporal Punishment has become a common feature in schools. Several incidents of such punishment have been reported. Such kind of punishment can physically impair a student for his/her whole life. In today's scenario, every child is aware about his rights. According to RTE act, 2009, teachers can not punish the child and for the positive discipline, teachers should use innovative methods in their teaching-learning process. Now there is need of child centered education. The National Commission for protection of child rights has suggested a code of regulation on the conduct of teachers in school. A standout feature of the code is a total ban on corporal punishment. So far only six Indian states have abided by this rule. Corporal punishment is just another form of physical violence and has no place in an enlightened society. It is a kind of punishment that affects the human body adversely. In this article, it has been discussed that to what extent prohibition of corporal punishment is effective for students and what kind of innovative methods are used by teachers in schools. Instead of corporal punishments, we can improve the students'behavior by learning the value of discipline in our life. Co-curricular activities are the best means to learn them some life-skills and social skills.
