Abstract

The energetic prosecution of experimental investigation and the reduction and interpretation of results obtained, making for a clearer understanding of the nature of geophysical phenomena, have characterized the activities of the Department during the year. In the execution of such research, it is essential from time to time to present a picture of the exact status of progress achieved. In this regard the Department has had a large share in the production of two treatises of the highest importance to the sciences of terrestrial magnetism and electricity which will satisfy a long‐felt need in the literature of geophysics. “Geomagnetism” by J. Bartels and S. Chapman will soon be issued by the Oxford University Press, and “Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity,” being volume VIII of the Physics of the Earth series sponsored by the National Research Council, is being printed by the McGraw‐Hill Book Company, and will issue in August, 1939. The former presenting the theoretical elements and the latter the practical and descriptive aspects will supplement each other in an authentic exposition of the subjects.
