Abstract
The concept of divine revelation is of central importance in all three monotheistic faiths. According to traditional Judaism, the entire Pentateuch is of divine origin; nothing is contained in the Five Books of Moses which was not revealed by God to Moses on Mt Sinai. As Maimonides explained: ‘Moses was like a scribe writing from dictation the whole of it, its chronicles, its narratives and its precepts … And there is no difference between verses like “And the sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim, Phut and Canaan” (Gen. 10.6), or “And his wife’s name was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred” (Gen. 36.39), and verses like “I am the Lord thy God” (Ex. 20.2) and “Hear, O Israel” (Deut. 6.4). They are all equally of divine origin and all belong to “the Law of God which is perfect, pure, holy, and true”.’1
