Abstract

A 50-year-old immunocompetent man with a history of chicken pox at age 3 presented with vision of 20/100 in the right eye for 3 days, with associated red eye. Anterior chamber examination was normal. Fundus showed macular exudative-retinal detachment with no visible retinal lesions (Fig A). Work-up revealed varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-immunoglobulin M (26, normal < 15) and immunoglobulin G (> 2000). Qualitative polymerase chain reaction of conjunctiva was positive for VZV. A diagnosis of posterior zoster-uveitis was made.
