Abstract
The “motor unit” concept is delineated and a classification of atrophies is presented. The four main categories are composed of disease states associated with (1) proximal symmetric, (2) distal symmetric, (3) diffuse bilateral and (4) restricted atrophies of skeletal muscles. Within each category, atrophies are separated according to origin: muscle, peripheral nerve, root or plexus, and anterior horn cell.
