Abstract

The concept of regression in the service of the ego is linked to the complementary notion of progression in the service of the ego. Both processes are described as cognitive-style components of creative thinking. Interactions between the field dependence-independence and fixity-mobility styles are discussed, as are psychoanalytic, trait, physiological, and developmental perspectives of style. Creative domain differences and the personality and psychopathological characteristics of creative thinkers are examined through the regression and progression mechanisms. The cognitive-styles approach offers a compelling and potentially fruitful framework for understanding creativity.
