Abstract

Collection of earthquake information—There are two active agencies for the collection of felt reports, the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey and the Jesuit Seismological Association. The former covers the Pacific Coast and Western Mountain Region through a seismological field‐party cooperating with Dr. Perry Byerly of the University of California. The other sections of the country are covered by the Jesuit Seismological Association and the Washington Office of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Jesuit Seismological Association being interested essentially in the Central Mississippi Valley Area. The Survey has developed on the Pacific Coast a system of reporting earthquakes whereby certain individuals report on shocks on their own initiative, but, in addition to this, special canvasses are made in the case of wide‐spread or destructive shocks. Because of the increased personnel available in the San Francisco Office of the Survey, the work incidental to the preparation of abstract reports has been transferred from the Washington Office to the San Francisco Office.
