Abstract

Cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) is a universal sight-threatening ocular disease in immunocompromised patients. It is the commonest opportunistic ocular disease in patients with late-stage acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and typically occurs when CD4+ T cell counts fall below 50/mm3. Similarly, it occurs in other disease situations like leukaemia, organ transplantation, systemic malignancy or autoimmune disease. Based on reference materials, the epidemiology, pathomechanism, clinical manifestation, diagnosis and therapy of CMVR are reviewed. Key words: Cytomegalovirus retinitis; Immunodeficiency; Antiviral therapy
