Abstract

Atrial septal defect is a common congenital heart disease in children.Percutaneous closure has evolved to become the first-line treatment strategy for most cases of atrial septal defect. With the development of devices and the growing clinical experience, indications for interventional treatment of atrial septal defect in children are gradually expanding. However, the safety and efficacy of interventional therapy for atrial septal defect in children younger than 2 years old are still controversial.Special types of atrial septal defect such as large defects, deficient surrounding rims, interatrial septal aneurysm and multi-fenestrated atrial septal defect still have great challenges.Although the techniques of percutaneous closure appear to be safe, some medium and long term complications have been brought to light, especially the long term ones.Further long time follow-up is still needed to evaluate the outcomes of this procedure. This review focuses on the status and development of ASD closure in children.
