Abstract

AbstractThe glass shell industry in India came into existence with the advent of the Second World War and during the pendency of the War three factories came in production. The installed capacity at present is more than the demand and, quantum of production is not far short of demand. Methods of production in all these factories are manual. Installation of mechanical units is only justified when the demand has increased considerably. The quality of production is good enough for the present day lamp manufacturing machinery operating in India. All the three factories are owned by lamp manufacturing undertakings. A few attempts have been made by glass factories not attached to a lamp factory to manufacture glass shells, without success. The industry has now reached such a stage that importation of glass shells from abroad is unnecessary.
